There are 10 residential colleges based on the scenic 144-hectare grounds of the St Lucia campus. The colleges represent the only type of on-campus accommodation available at St Lucia, however they are not owned or managed by the University. Each college is an independent organization. There are a few organizations (not part of the University) who specialize in student housing. Some offer residential college style housing, others consist of apartment complexes purpose built for students. A variety of houses, units (apartments, flats), townhouses, and granny flats are usually available in the suburbs surrounding campus. Students may elect to live alone or share with others. From the Harry Potter Alliance to the Hong Kong Student Society, there is a club or society for everyone. UQ Union (UQU) has more than 220 clubs and societies, with over 35,000 students learning new skills and hanging out with like-minded people. QUEST is a society specifically for study abroad and exchange students that provide events and a chance to meet people from all over the world.

Activities include theatre, dances, concerts, movies, debates, barbecues, car rallies, and regular market days. Students can join any of the more than 135 union-affiliated clubs and societies, or can even start their own clubs. These clubs and societies have been formed by people with a wide range of interests, hobbies and backgrounds, and contribute to the colour and diversity of UQ campus life. UQ understands the challenges facing international students far from home, family, and friends. A range of services provides you with support during your settling-in period and throughout your stay. The University maintains high levels of personal safety for all students on campus and runs a UniSafe program promoting personal safety awareness. All UQ students are members of the UQ Union, a student-run organization, which provides representation on University, and educational bodies and extensive social welfare, recreational, and commercial services. UQ also provides an integrated, professional service in the areas of international student advice, careers and employment, personal counselling, financial assistance, disability support, and learning support.

Throughout January and February, free tours of UQ's St Lucia and Ipswich campuses are available. The tours provide an insight into the University's facilities, including state of the art library and teaching facilities, extensive sporting grounds, museums, retail outlets, and other services.
